How to tell it is the battery
On an iPhone, open Settings, then Battery, then Battery Health & Charging. Under about 80% maximum capacity means the cell is worn. On Android the equivalent is buried, but the symptoms are the same:
- Charge drops in large jumps rather than gradually — 60% to 35% in a few minutes.
- The phone shuts down at 20 or 30% and then reports charge again once plugged in.
- It dies noticeably faster outside in winter.
- It gets warm doing nothing much.
- Performance has slowed — on iPhones this is deliberate throttling to stop unexpected shutdowns, and a new battery removes it.
Swollen batteries: stop using the phone
If the screen is lifting away from the frame, there is a gap along one edge, or the phone rocks on a flat table, the battery is swelling. That is a lithium cell venting, and it is the one fault where we ask you to stop charging the phone and contact us the same day. Do not press the screen back down, do not put it in a drawer, and do not fly with it. We handle swollen cells with the right equipment and dispose of them properly.
What "12 months" means here
The warranty covers the cell and our workmanship for a year. Batteries are consumables — a healthy new cell should still be above 85% capacity after twelve months of normal use, and if yours is not, we replace it. What the warranty does not cover is physical or liquid damage after the fitting.
Habits that make a new battery last
Charging to 100% and sitting there overnight, every night, is what wears cells fastest. Most phones now have an optimised charging setting that holds at 80% until just before your alarm — turn it on. Heat is the other killer: a phone left on a car dashboard in July ages more in a week than in a normal year. Neither of these things will save a cell that is already worn, but both will extend the new one.
Is it worth it on an older phone?
Usually, yes. A £25 battery in a four-year-old handset that still does everything you need is a better outcome than £600 on a new phone, and it keeps a working device out of landfill. If the handset has other faults stacking up we will say so and let you decide — we would rather lose one job than sell you a repair that does not make sense.

Not necessarily. Apple's own threshold is 80%, and at 82% you would notice only a modest improvement. If the phone is still comfortably lasting your day, wait. If it is shutting down early or slowing noticeably, replace it now — that behaviour will not improve on its own.
A swelling battery. Stop charging it and get in touch the same day. It is a straightforward repair when caught early, but a swollen cell that is left in a phone can rupture, and it should not be sitting on your bedside table overnight.
On an iPhone, very often yes. iOS deliberately throttles performance when a battery can no longer supply peak current, and a new cell removes the throttling immediately. On Android the effect is smaller but a worn cell still causes shutdowns under load.
